This section examines how toy developers create proto-scientific discourse communities in which children can participate and suggests how children worked within those communities to pursue their own purposes. By participating in these communities, children learned about science, but they also learned about who does science. Read about gender monoglossic early scientific communities for boys created by companies like A.C. Gilbert and ChemCraft, as well as more current communities created for girls by Roominate and Goldie Blox to counter the assumption that only boys can do science.
